Who is CKimber Designs?
Chad Kimber, this blonde haired, shy, 8yr old boy loved putting things together. Legos, bikes, anything. He loved to know how things worked. To meet his cub scout requirements, he decided to build a toy box. This project was to be done mostly by the boy, with help of course from his Dad for the power saw. Well, this boy's Dad, although attentive and very supportive, was not always home when this proactive boy was anxious to work on his "first project".
This was the beginning of when Chad learned how to figure things out on his own. With the pieces roughed to size and a garage full of random supplies, hand tools, and of course a drill. Later to become his most prized and most used tool, this boy completed his first project. This toy box was an exact replica of his bright yellow, Box Elder County school bus, complete with matching bus number.
Over the years, Chad continued to test his skills. Building a fort made from scrap crates, turning all the scrap 2x4's into a carryall rack for his Dad's tractor, or Adirondack chair for his Mom's immaculate garden. He was always looking for a project. He was always on a destination to create. Once the project was done, the search was on for the next.
At age 11or 12, Chad really wanted a remote control boat. This was a luxury beyond his reach. He did however have a remote control car that was no longer filling this young man's need. A few hours in the garage, again with available scraps of wood and dissected remote control parts, a wood boat, complete with custom propeller, was ready to test. The test was disastrous. It sank!
Now what? Knowing that wood floats, and not understanding the laws of buoyancy, Chad was dumbfounded. Then the idea. The idea that would ultimately kill this project for good. The gears in Chad's mind were churning... air floats; this boat has too many gaps to contain air; balloons hold air; balloons can change shape. That's it! Put a balloon in the hull of the boat and fill the balloon with air. This will do it! The balloon was filling nicely. The balloon was slowly beginning to match the shape of the boat interior. This was looking promising. Oh yea! So excited to test this boat. BOOM!!!.
Dozens of wood pieces mixed with bits of blue latex, some resembling a side panel, some just fragments, went flying across the work bench.
The boat was gone beyond recovery. The internal pressure from the balloon pushing outward on the sides of the boat was more than it could withstand. That was one mad young man! Furious! All that work gone!
But the desire to create was not. Obstacles do not stop the process, they give us chances to do things better the next time.
Picture frames, shelves, a barn, bookshelf, wood puzzles, basement remodel, cup holders, boxes, window seats, keepsake chests and hundreds of other projects continue to fuel that need to create and to solve everyday problems.
